There are challenges with the Rains and Thatch Rooves. While the rains are a blessing, they bring challenges as well. After three consecutive years of drought, many widows’ huts have leaking thatch rooves that need repair. This is especially difficult in the intense heat before the rains. Here you can see a young man working to repair the roof of Gogo Jiva’s hut.
Rains bring relief and struggles. The long-awaited rains have refreshed the land, and nature itself seems to rejoice. However, the late rains came at a cost. Many families in Jengwe lost their animals during the dry season, and the community fights to recover.
The dry riverbeds fill up briefly during the rains and the youth take advantage of this heat-busting benefit. Animals can drink closer to home, reducing the risk of predator attacks as well. While water may only be here for a month or two, it is celebrated while it is.
